As wedding photographers, it is one of the most common questions we get asked. As someone who has shot hundreds of weddings, I can tell you this… the best images are the ones that are unexpected or filled with real and raw emotions. The stiff and forced poses are often very noticeable and distracting in your wedding gallery, while the photos that stay with you forever are the ones where you are fully present, connected, and honest. Those tiny in between moments often end up being the heart of your entire gallery.
One of the easiest ways to feel more comfortable on your wedding day is to practice ahead of time. We all have that full body mirror at home waiting for you to try different poses and positions, and even better, most of us have a phone in our pocket that can help us understand our angles. Try different smiles, angles, and hairstyles, and make sure you do this in both indoor and outdoor lighting. This little bit of preparation gives you confidence, and confidence always photographs beautifully. Bring a small bag with makeup or accessories for quick touch ups throughout the day so you always feel your best.
When it comes to standing for photos, simple adjustments can make a big difference. Resting your weight on your back leg creates a relaxed and flattering shape. Keep your shoulders soft and slightly back to open your posture. Gently push your chin forward and tilt it down to define your jawline. Keep your hands loose and natural, hold your bouquet around your belly button, or if you are wearing a suit, fix your jacket or link arms with your partner. These little shifts help your body look comfortable and natural rather than frozen or tense.
Another important tip is to breathe. Pretend you are in a yoga class and stay aware of your breath throughout the day. When you are nervous or tense, it shows in your face and posture. One of our favorite tricks to get a real, genuine smile is to whisper your favorite vegetable into your partners ear in the weirdest voice possible. It works almost every time. Anything that brings you out of your head and into the moment will make your expressions softer, happier, and more authentic.
Lighting is also one of the biggest factors in great photos. Many photographers schedule time during Golden Hour, that magical window just before sunset when everything is warm, soft, and romantic. It is the most flattering light of the entire day. During the rest of the day, we use shade or back lit spots to avoid harsh or unflattering lighting. Trust your photographer when they guide you on timing, because the right light alone can elevate your gallery more than anything else.
Movement is another key to natural photos. The more you move, the more your nerves disappear. Run together and act a little goofy. Twirl your dress. Dance with your partner. Laugh, play, and be silly together. Movement takes the pressure off posing and brings out your real connection in the most beautiful way. Some of the best images come from couples who stopped worrying about doing it right and simply started having fun.
Pinterest can also be extremely helpful for inspiration. Create a board and save the poses, styles, and ideas that resonate with you. Use it as inspiration rather than a strict checklist. The magic happens when you take those ideas and naturally make them your own. Your photographer will help interpret those concepts so they fit your lighting, your location, and your personality.
Be aware of the moments in between as well. Many of the most emotional and meaningful shots come from unscripted, candid moments when you did not even realize a camera was nearby. Keep an eye on your posture, do your touch ups when needed, and allow yourself to be fully present. Even the quiet transitions can become the photos that make you emotional years later.
Preparation matters too. Start your wedding day earlier than you think. There will be so many moving parts and last minute details. Do your skin prep, your everything shower, your shave or grooming routine, your spray tan, or anything else that makes you feel your most confident. When you feel good, you look good, and when you look good, you forget the camera is there at all.
Communicating with your photographer ahead of time is incredibly important. Make your vision clear. Share your ideas, your concerns, your favorite angles, your must have shots, and the things that make you feel most like yourself. When your photographer understands you, the photos become more personal and meaningful.
Do not forget to prepare for weather and breaks throughout the day. Whether it is heat, cold, rain, wind, or simply overstimulation, give yourself room to pause and reset. A comfortable couple photographs far better than a couple pretending to be comfortable.
Our editing style keeps your photos looking natural and personalized. We offer many options to match your vibe and can show you how your images look in different styles so you can choose the one that best fits your day. Sometimes the style you thought you wanted may not match the lighting or venue, and that is okay. Our team will guide you and make sure everything is polished, cohesive, and beautiful.
Now, hopefully this guide makes you feel a bit better walking into your big day. The best piece of advice to leave you with is to be yourself. Do not put too much pressure on yourself or the day. Enjoy it. Because at the end of it all, the moments that matter most are never posed. They are the moments where you are laughing, breathing, moving, loving, and simply being present. Trust the process, trust your partner, trust your photographer, and let the day unfold exactly as it was meant to. Your story is already beautiful, and your photos will be too.
